Kozhi Biryani Recipe: How to Make Delicious Kozhi Biryani at Home

Biryani is a popular South Asian dish that is enjoyed by many people around the world. It is a flavorful and aromatic rice dish that is typically made with meat, spices, and herbs. Kozhi Biryani is a variant of biryani that is made with chicken and is popular in South India, especially in the state of Tamil Nadu. In this blog, we will share an easy and delicious Kozhi Biryani recipe that you can make at home.

Ingredients:

  • 500g of chicken, cut into medium-sized pieces
  • 2 cups of Basmati rice
  • 2 onions, sliced
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • 1/2 cup of mint leaves
  • 1/2 cup of coriander leaves
  • 1 tablespoon of ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tablespoon of biryani masala powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of red chili powder
  • 2 tablespoons of oil
  • 1 tablespoon of ghee
  • Salt, to taste
  • Water, as needed

For the Marinade:

  • 1/2 cup of yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon of red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon of coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garam masala powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • Salt, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the Basmati rice in water and soak it for 30 minutes.

  2. In a bowl, mix the ingredients for the marinade and add the chicken pieces. Mix well and let it marinate for at least 30 minutes.

  3. In a pot, heat the oil and ghee. Add the sliced onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.

  4. Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute.

  5. Add the chopped tomatoes, green chilies, mint leaves, and coriander leaves. Sauté until the tomatoes are cooked and the mixture becomes a paste.

  6. Add the biryani masala powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well and sauté for a minute.

  7. Add the marinated chicken pieces and mix well. Cook for 10-12 minutes on medium heat, stirring occasionally.

  8. In another pot, boil water and add salt to taste. Add the soaked Basmati rice and cook until it is 3/4th done.

  9. Drain the water from the rice and add it to the pot with the chicken mixture. Mix well.

  10. Cover the pot with a lid and cook on low heat for 15-20 minutes or until the rice is fully cooked.

  11. Serve hot with raita and papad.
