Beary Biryani is a popular dish from the Beary Muslim community in the coastal regions of Karnataka, India. This flavorful and aromatic dish is a perfect blend of spices, meat and rice is enjoyed by people of all ages. In this blog post, we will share with you an easy recipe to make this delicious Beary Biryani at home.

Ingredients:

  • 500g Basmati rice
  • 500g mutton or chicken, cut into pieces
  • 2 onions, finely sliced
  • 4-5 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala powder
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 cup curd
  • Few strands of saffron soaked in milk
  • Handful of mint leaves
  • Handful of coriander leaves

Instructions:

  1. Wash the rice and soak it in water for 30 minutes. Drain and keep it aside.

  2. In a large pot, heat oil and ghee. Add sliced onions and green chilies and sauté until onions are golden brown.

  3. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a few seconds.

  4. Add mutton or chicken pieces, turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala powder, and salt to taste. Mix well and cook until the meat is browned.

  5. Add curd and mix well. Cover the pot and let it cook until the meat is tender.

  6. In another pot, boil water and add soaked rice. Cook the rice until it is 80% done. Drain the rice and keep it aside.

  7. In the same pot, layer half of the cooked rice. Sprinkle some saffron milk, mint leaves, and coriander leaves on top of the rice.

  8. Layer the cooked meat on top of the rice.

  9. Layer the remaining rice on top of the meat. Sprinkle some saffron milk, mint leaves, and coriander leaves on top of the rice.

  10. Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and cook on low heat for 15-20 minutes or until the rice is fully cooked.

  11. Once done, turn off the heat and let the biryani rest for 10 minutes before serving.
